Boka Sami Beach
Boka Sami is a small, laid-back beach in the fishing village of Sint Michiel on Curaçao’s west coast, tucked between Blue Bay and Kokomo Beach, about 15 minutes from Willemstad. Unlike its polished neighbours, this free public beach is a local favourite with an authentic island feel, where fishermen still bring their colourful boats in to the wooden pier. There is little shade, but the calm, clear water of Sint Michielsbaai is ideal for a quiet swim or snorkel, and a dive school and a couple of relaxed fish restaurants sit right by the shore. The ruins of Fort Sint Michiel overlook the bay, and the salt lake behind the village is a reliable spot for flamingos. A coastal trail leads over the hills to Kokomo Beach for those who like to combine a swim with a short hike. Come for the unhurried local atmosphere, fresh fish and a glimpse of everyday Curaçao.
Caracasbaai
Caracasbaai is a rugged, history-laden bay on Curaçao’s south-east coast, just beyond Spanish Water and about 15 minutes from Willemstad. This is no manicured resort beach: a free, pebbly shoreline at the foot of a peninsula crowned by 18th-century Fort Beekenburg and the old Quarantine House, with wide views across the water. Its star attraction lies just offshore — the famous Tugboat wreck, resting in around five metres of clear water and teeming with fish, making it one of the island’s best snorkel and dive spots for all levels. Neighbouring Directors Bay, once reserved for Shell executives and the Dutch royal family, offers calm swimming and a second reef. A quirky beach bar and hiking trails around the peninsula add to the laid-back, off-the-beaten-track character. Bring water shoes and a snorkel mask — Caracasbaai rewards those who come to explore rather than to lounge.

The house reef drops from a gentle sandy slope to a coral wall, making it a favourite for snorkelers and divers, with turtles and rays often spotted. Sundays bring a lively happy hour with a DJ, and the west-facing bay turns every evening into a sunset show. Pelicans, iguanas and the iconic swing in the sea add to the charm. Entry is free, with ample parking, showers and restrooms on hand.
